3 April, 2012: Maruti Ertiga’s launch date has been fixed as April 12th, although country’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India unveiled its new Multi Purpose Vehicle- Maruti Ertiga on Jan 6th at the Auto Expo 2012. Maruti Ertiga price is expected to be between Rs 6 lakh-Rs 9 lakh and will meet head-on with Toyota Innova. Maruti Ertiga MPV has now come under the list of most awaited upcoming cars in India and people are actually looking forward to the new MPV. It is based on Maruti R3 concept which was first unveiled during Auto Expo 2010. The 7 seater MPV has three rows with long wheelbase to comfort many passengers. Maruti’s brand value is already blessing the car and on top of that competitive pricing will add fuel to the sales of this wagon. The new Maruti car will come in three petrol and three diesel trims. The petrol variant will come powered with a K-14, 1.4 L motor, delivering 70KW power @6000 rpm and a peak torque of 130Nm @4000 rpm plus mileage of 16.02 kmpl, while the diesel variant will come affixed with a 1.3 liter diesel engine, churning out maximum power of 66KW@4000 rpm and 200Nm torque @1750 rpm and a whopping mileage of 20.77 kmpl. Maruti Ertiga Review

With the introduction of Maruti Ertiga MPV, also lately popular as Maruti R3, Maruti India has taken into its ambit almost all car segments. It is hoped that following the robust branding and low maintenance nature of Maruti cars, Maruti Ertiga will soon make its own space in the MPV market in India. Maruti Ertiga is tagged as Indian family car even before its launch. This can be attributed to the effective price tag expected for Ertiga MPV. The first impression formed about the Ertiga MPV is very appealing and consumers are longing for this vehicle. The new MPV received its name from Indonesian language in which Ertiga means Three Rows. However, Ertiga will position itself in the MPV sub-segment that broadly accounts for 9 per cent of the automobile market.

Maruti officials claim that with MPV Ertiga, Maruti will be creating an all-new segment in the Indian auto industry. It would also announce its entry into the utility segment of cars where the company is currently not a major player. Maruti in India has loads of cars including some of the best selling cars in almost every segment. Maruti has Maruti Gypsy and Maruti Grand Vitara in the SUV segment; however these have meager sales as compared to SUVs of other brands. Besides, there are vans including Maruti Omni and Maruti Eeco that provide good option and are value for money cars.

Maruti Ertiga was first unveiled at the Auto Expo held in New Delhi in 2010 as Maruti’s upcoming MPV-Maruti R3 concept. However, the global premier of Maruti Ertiga was done in 2012 Auto Expo. The compact MPV has been developed in collaboration with parent Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC)'s research and design wing and is being produced in India itself. The designers have carefully built in `features and attributes’ of a sedan in a compact MPV Maruti Ertiga which is essentially built on theme of togetherness. Utility vehicles occupy 15% of the total automobile sales and Maruti was not tapping the benefits from this segment till now. But with Ertiga, Maruti India is all set to challenge the hegemony of rivals.

The almost fully grown seven-seater MPV will be available in both petrol and diesel variants and two different trims. The Maruti Ertiga petrol is packed with 1.4 litre 1372cc K series (probably K14) engine that produces a maximum power of 70 Kw at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 130 Nm at 4000 rpm. Being the K-Series engine, the USP of these engines is that they are more fuel efficient. The Certified fuel efficiency (as per CMV Rule 155, India cycle) of Petrol Ertiga is a top of the class 16.02 km per litre. The 1.3 L 1196cc DDiS Super Turbo diesel engine will be the other engine guise that will power the MPV. This engine is similar to that of the Maruti SX4 sedan. The Maruti Ertiga diesel will produce 66 Kw at 4000 rpm and 200 Nm at 1750 rpm. The Certified fuel efficiency (CMV Rule 155, India cycle) of Diesel Ertiga is a class leading 20.77 kmpl. The Maruti MPV Ertiga will have a five speed manual transmission system. The car is a front wheel drive and sports fine quality interiors, which makes it more appealing.

MPV is space efficient and will boast of its interior space placing it in the mini MPV segment with 4265mm in length and 2740 mm wheelbase. It is expected that two airbags will be part of standard equipment of the Ertiga. Ertiga MPV is expected to be available in at least six variants: LXi, VXi, ZXi, LDi, VDi and ZDi. Higher end variant Maruti Ertiga ZXi is expected to have Anti-lock Braking System. Other features such as twin AC with climate control, 3 spoke tilt-power steering with mounted controls, power windows with auto down, central locking, audio system (USB Compatible, 4+2 speakers), multi information display, keyless entry, etc will be stuffed in Maruti Ertiga. The roof mounted AC vents in the second and the last row passenger seats will provide passenger comfort. Blazing Red, Torque Blue, Silky Silver, Arctic White, Glistening Grey and Midnight Black are the colors well anticipated for Maruti Ertiga. The new MPV is unquestionably designed to ensnare the Indian families who are specially looking for a perfect merger of everyday space and usability and this MPV by Maruti is absolutely ideal for them.

Models

Maruti Ertiga LXI       This would be the base petrol model of the series. The Ertiga LXI will be powered by K series 1.4 lire of petrol engine which belts out 93.8bhp of max power and 13.25kgm of maximum torque. Since it will be the range opener somewhere near to Rs 6 lakh, it will not be stuffed with too many features but power windows, power steering, body color bumpers, manually folding OVRMs (outside rear view mirrors), multi trip meters, AC, etc. will come as standard.
Maruti Ertiga VXI                                                       This will be the mid range model of the new Maruti MPV also powered by the same K14 petrol engine. It is anticipated that Ertiga VXI will come with features like central locking, electrically folding OVRMs, keyless entry, adjustable headrests, body colored OVRMs, door handles, ABS with EBD and many more. The mileage offered by all petrol variants will equal 16.02 kmpl.
Maruti Ertiga ZXIThe Maruti Ertiga ZXI will be the range topper in petrol models. It will be stuffed with a number of premium features which won’t be offered in the starting and medium range model. These features include Airbags, Leather Seats, Music System, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, etc.
Maruti Ertiga LDIThe Ertiga LDI variant will be the base diesel variant which will be powered by a 1.3 litre DDiS turbo diesel motor producing 66KW@4000 rpm and 200Nm torque. This variant will carry exactly same features as Maruti Ertiga LXI, except the different engine system.
Maruti Ertiga VDIErtiga VDI will sit in the mid diesel segment MPV and will borrow its features as Maruti Ertiga VXI, except the different engine system. VDI will house the same diesel engine as LDI.  Maruti claims a mileage of ARAI certified 20.77 kmpl for all diesel variants including VDI.
Maruti Ertiga ZDI     The Maruti Ertiga ZDI is the diesel top end variant and will be carrying all the features offered with the ZXI model. The ZDI will be the highest priced model among the Ertiga model range.

Mileage, Average And Fuel Economy

All the variants of this mini MPV will abide by the new generation BS-IV emission norms and all the credit goes to Maruti India’s new age exquisite K series engine, which is highly fuel efficient and will emit lower carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Maruti Ertiga will not disappoint customers in terms of mileage. The mileage of Maruti Ertiga, will impress its consumers in a single drive. Officials have cleared that the petrol variant of Maruti Ertiga will deliver the perfect mileage of 16.02 km per litre. On the other hand, the diesel variant of Maruti Ertiga will give an impressive mileage of 20.77 km per litre, which is pretty good for a MPV. However, we expect that these figures will be possible to achieve only on highways and the city mileage would be comparatively low. The variable valve timing (VVT) technology in the mill of the Ertiga will help to change the timing of the fuel intake for continuous power generation that ensures maximum use of engine power. In other words, the new technology guarantees maximum fuel consumption, engine performance and lesser emissions thereby increasing acceleration.

Power

The petrol variant of Maruti Ertiga comes with K series (K 14) 1.4 litre of petrol engine with a displacement of 1373cc, which keeps the ability to produce maximum power of 98.3 BHP at 6000 rpm with 13.25kgm of torque at 4000 rpm. To our surprise, the K 14 petrol engine is the largest version of K-series so far and because of being enormous, it will deliver better power and torque. The mini MPV will also be available in the diesel version, which will definitely bring a smile on the face of the Indian consumers. The diesel version of Maruti Ertiga will feature 1.3 litre of 1248cc of DDiS super turbo diesel motor. The engine is pretty analogous to Maruti SX4 sedan and will churn out 88.5 BHP of power at 4000 rpm along with 20.39kgm of torque at 1750 rpm. Variable Valve Timing in engine will help in continuous power generation guaranteeing maximum use of engine power.

Acceleration & Pick-Up

To enhance the pickup and acceleration of Ertiga, the engines are wisely mated with a five speed manual gearbox. The Maruti car can accelerate from 0kmph to 100 kmph in 15 seconds for petrol and 15.5 seconds for diesel Ertiga. This gearbox provides the mini MPV an awesome acceleration and it doesn’t take much of a time to touch the top speed of 155 km per hour, which certainly sounds amazing. Maruti Suzuki India has made sure that the driver gets an awesome and relaxed driving experience.

Exterior
India's largest car maker, which sells every second car in the country has shown a thumbs up to unwrap its first MPV, the Ertiga, subsequently challenging the already existing car brands in the segment. The Ertiga seems to have borrowed much of its design concept from Suzuki. The Ertiga, is purely based on the RIII concept, and can be said to be based on Maruti Ritz. Car pundits say that Maruti Ertiga exteriors are inspired from Ritz hatchback especially if styling is considered. In the front the nose of car looks very similar to that of the Ritz, with its slot-like grille and bellying bonnet. The radiator grille contains the Suzuki emblem. However, the lower part or chin of Ertiga is quite unlike Ritz being much wide and bulky. The air inlet under the body color bumper is large complementing a MPV look and so are the enclosures that house the fog lights. The headlights are more or less Swift type with bulged appearance and sweeping sideward.

This is a peoples-mover, and that means a lot of additional space, so Maruti has elongated the wheelbase to 2740 mm, raising it by 380mm as compared to the Ritz, and the roof is higher. However, Maruti Ertiga is almost similar in size and dimensions as the Innova or the Xylo, however it is smaller in lenght. Xylo has the maxmum interior comfort. When viewed from side, the sweeping back roof is the major attraction. Body color outside mirrors and body color door handles are missed out from the lower variants of this new car so as to keep the price in check. The quarter glass helps the passengers of last row to view outside. The windows and windscreen will be tinted to protect the inmates from sunlight. Alloy wheels with wheel cover heighten the luxury quotient of Ertiga.

Ertiga MPV will come with tinted rear windscreen wrapping itself around the back rendering the MPV a ‘pillar-less’ look from the back. Even a wiper and defogger can be noticed on the Windscreen. The tiny tail-lamps seem to have been designed with cost rather than visibility in mind. Body color bumpers continue at the rear also however, whereas the boot is not very spacious because of three seats in the MPV.

Exterior Measurements

The stretched 2740mm of wheelbase and the additional third row seats have rendered a lengthy appearance to Ertiga. The total length will turn out to be 4265mm, well over the critical four-metre length. This has resulted in the Ertiga not qualifying for the lower excise duty benefit for small cars. The width and height of this MPV comes out to be 1695mm and 1685mm respectively. What adds more appeal is the 15 inches of alloy wheels, which ensures smooth ride. Moreover, the stylish MPV has a remarkable ground clearance of 185mm and the chassis and body weight of petrol and diesel variants comes up to 1160kg and 1235 kg, respectively.

Interior

Maruti Ertiga interiors can boasts of its seating capacity but not comfort although Maruti designers have put in their bits to give a satisfying product. The MPV is designed to lure the big Indian families looking for an ideal blend of everyday usability and space. The Ertiga isn’t just a practical mono-volume with three rows of seats like the much more utility van Eeco. It may not be as spacious as the Innova, but rest assured quality will be decent as per Maruti’s standards.

According to initial information, a lot of parts inside the car are borrowed from the very successful hatchback in India-Maruti Swift. Light weight materials contribute majorly in giving the interiors a more luxurious look. The beige interior theme along with a number of styling features can prove a real plus point for the car. Ertiga MPV that will seat seven people has made a good attempt in utilizing the space inside the car. The split design in middle let the passengers to jump to the third row and that too only from the left hand side. The middle and last-row occupants will also get improved cooling from roof-mounted AC vents in these rows. The rear seats will also get armrest with cup holders. The boot space is not too much but foldable rear seats can make the boot large for keeping ample of luggage. The front seats will have four-way adjustments.

The new Ertiga sports a 5 speed manual gearbox, power windows with electrically adjustable mirror and auto down facility. The 3 spoke tilt adjustable electric steering wheel works like magic while driving. The steering has audio controls mounted on it along with keyless entry and central door locking. Audio system is powerful and comes with 4+2 speakers and USB compatibility. The instrument cluster has two trip meters and multi information display sums up the entire look of the front cabin. Remote for central locking, fuel filler and boot lid are also present in Ertiga. However, the driver seat has electric adjustments and the car is also blessed with a range of storage spaces inside including bottle holders, coin holders, sunglass holders, etc.

Interior Comfort

Ertiga is an audacious and chippy initiative, in which Maruti’s designers have carefully built in `features and attributes’ of a sedan in the form of a compact MPV to evolve a next generation vehicle. Built on the central theme of ‘togetherness’, Ertiga is an interesting mobility solution for young dynamic confident Indian who wants to hold back individuality and yet retain Indian custom of ‘togetherness’. The plush and premium interiors of the car exude trust, elegance, class, versatile character and agility. The interiors offer an array of new features such as a 3-spoke, tilt adjustable electric steering, twin AC, strong audio system  with USB Compatibility and 4+2 speakers, steering mounted audio controls, central door locking and keyless entry, multi information display, power windows with auto down and electrically adjustable mirror. The Ertiga offers a three-row flexi-seating arrangement for 7 passengers (2+3+2) that is easier to operate and is high on storage space. Each row of the car has been designed keeping in mind the occupants’ seating requirements; whether for an individual’s day-to-day business commitments or for a family’s weekend shopping, dining or weekend drives.

Engine Capacity & Performance

As we have already mentioned, the Maruti Ertiga model will be rolled-out in both diesel and petrol variants. Both the variants will consist of 4 cylinder in-line arrangement in the engine. The petrol variant of the car will be powered by a 1.4 liter power train of Maruti’s latest K Series with VVT. The K14 engine is the largest K series engine so far. With a displacement of 1373 cc, the engine of petrol model is expected to be delivering a peak power of 98.3 bhp along with a peak torque of 13.25kgm.

On the other hand, the diesel car model will come powered by a 1.3L multijet turbo diesel engine with DDiS (Direct Diesel Injection System) with a displacement of 1248 cc. The Maruti Ertiga diesel engine will come coupled with Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) for better efficiency. The maximum power and maximum torque figures of the Ertiga diesel are expected to be 88.5 BHP and 20.39kgm, respectively. This is the same engine that Maruti is sourcing from Fiat for its Swift, Ritz and Swift Dzire models.

The variable valve timing (VVT) technology in the mill of the Maruti Ertiga will assist in changing the timing of fuel intake so that continuous power generation takes place ensuring maximum use of engine power. In other words, the new technology guarantees maximum fuel consumption, engine performance and lesser emissions thereby increasing acceleration.

Both petrol and diesel version of the car will come coupled with a five speed manual transmission gearbox as standard. The automatic transmission version of Ertiga is expected to be launched in the country after a few months of the launch of Manual transmission version. All variants of the car will be compatible with the new generation BS-IV emission norms, thanks to the Maruti’s new age K series engine, which is not only better in fuel efficiency, but also emits lower Co2  in the environment.
